Ira Flatow will participate in a panel discussion with James D. Watson, Nobel Prize winner for the discovery of the double-helix structure of DNA, on the controversial race for that discovery as depicted in Anna Ziegler’s new play, Photograph 51, currently on stage at The Ensemble Studio Theatre as part The Ensemble Studio Theatre/ Alfred P. Sloan Project. Also on the panel will be nucleic acid crystallographer HeLen Berman, author Lynne Osman Elkin, New York Times science reporter Nicholas Wade, and playwright Anna Ziegler. Columbia Biology Chair and EST/Sloan Foundation science advisor Stuart Firestein will moderate the discussion that will cover Rosalind Franklin’s role in the discovery of DNA’s structure, ethics, competition, credit, gender bias, and much more

The Inaugural USA Science and Engineering Festival, hosted by Lockheed Martin, is the country’s first national science festival and descended on the Washington, D.C. area in October 2010. Opening on 10/10/10 the culmination of the Festival was a free, two-day Expo on the National Mall and surrounding areas that will featured over 1500 fun, hands-on science activities and over 50 stage shows and performances on four stages. Ira Flatow was part a panel discussion about the film Space Tourists, which follows the adventures of Iranian-American entrepreneur Anousheh Ansari, who became the first female space tourist in the world. The filmmaker and film subject discussed the film with Ira as well as whether the future of space exploration will be left up to commercial market forces. Learn more »
